Dear Fellow Arizonans
Are we better off than we were four years ago?
It’s a question that every elected official running for re-election must answer when asking for the trust and faith of voters yet again. It’s now a question President Trump must answer.
Let’s consider the President’s campaign slogan, “Make America Great Again.”
In just three short years the President’s behavior, disregard for our institutions and laws and disrespectful treatment of decades-old allies has left us to take up the exact task that he claimed to be undertaking – the restoration of American greatness. That effort starts with electing a new President in November. Review the following American pillars and ask yourself, honestly, if improvement is possible with four more years of President Trump.
Americans’ safety - This is twofold. First, the President’s complete mishandling of the COVID-19 crisis not only has left over 150,000 Americans dead but has exacted great economic damage on our nation (and especially Arizona). Second, the President has severed or damaged ties with many of America’s critical alliances, meaning that the work to keep us safe that used to occur overseas is now moving closer and closer to home.
American values. We used to be a nation marked by decisive action, compassion, and unshakeable faith in our own determined spirit – and our President is who we look to as an embodiment of those ideals.
American honesty. When the President speaks, the whole nation expects the information provided to be coming from the top experts. We need a President we can trust, not one who commutes the sentence of a friend who was convicted of lying under oath to Congress.
American leadership. We used to be the nation the rest of the world turned to for leadership in times of crisis. When 9/11 happened, we led the charge to defeat terror. When ISIS rose in the Middle East, we fought back. Now? Our nation turns our back on allies and is consumed by a pandemic that so many other countries have found ways to control.
American democracy. The American Constitution stands as one of the great achievements in democracy, and loyalty to our founding document sits at the core of what it means to be American. We need a President who respects the Constitution and who we can trust to faithfully execute the law, fairly. This President turned soldiers on citizens exercising their First Amendment rights so he could have a photo-op.
These values used to be the basics that everyone, regardless of party, agreed on. We had disagreements on how exactly to live out and implement those values, but we started from the same place.
That’s why we are proud to sign this letter under the banner of Republicans for a New President. Whether we are still registered or recently former Republicans, the party that we signed up for -- the one of limited government, equal opportunity for all, free trade, and more -- has sold its soul in the name of possessing power at all costs. Above all else, we are loyal to our Constitution and therefore cannot stand by while elected Republicans allow President Trump to degrade the foundations of our great nation.
We believe that America is worth fighting for in 2020, just as it was in 1776, in 1862, in 1941, and in 2001. We don’t believe we need to make it great again; it was already great. The good news is that the damage to our country is not beyond repair. But we need to act, and the moment is now. We’ve all seen the analysts make clear that it could very well be up to us Arizonans to decide the fate of this election. Let’s make the right choice for our nation.
Now is a moment for courage. It’s a moment to stand up for something larger than ourselves. Whether you voted for President Trump in 2016 or not does not matter. After November, we can go back to our old debates and disagreements. But now we all must unite behind America’s desperate need for a new President.
Whether the action is as simple as voting for Joe Biden in November, abstaining from the Presidential election entirely, or adding your voice to our ever-growing group of disaffected current or former Republicans, we invite you to join us.
Sincerely,
